The Craft of Hand Block Printing
Block printing is a traditional method of applying patterns to fabric using hand-carved wooden blocks, dipped in dye and stamped by hand, one impression at a time. Each design begins with a master artisan carving a motif into a wooden block, often taking days for intricate patterns. Dyes are carefully mixed by hand, creating subtle variations in colour that make each piece unique. The block is then pressed onto stretched fabric repeatedly, with the artisan aligning each impression by eye. Once printed, the fabric is sun-dried and heat- or steam-set before being cut and sewn into its final form. From carving to printing, every piece carries the marks of the hands that made it.
